Muscle Memory

“Believes longer than recollects, longer than knowing even wonders.”

Memory is

nothing more than

retrospect

Nostalgia

claiming a significance

that isn’t there

In and of itself

You’re only remembered because

another “had” you

they had to

do something

say anything

nice at your

funeral

What of those

who never know

their mother

(they tell us

our birth mothers

think of us

on our birthdays

but I wonder

if it’s not with

pain and dread

something surely

we never asked for)

etching

lines

faded

into frost

panes

on the window,

I wonder

what your

name was.
